News Index Bayworld’s Penguin Waddle

Date: 3 October 2012

Our African Penguin has recently been reclassified as an endangered species and it has been estimated that within 50 years there may no longer be any of these iconic seabirds in our oceans! This is very scary and incredibly sad as a lot of their decline is due to human influence. Bayworld has decided to raise awareness in the Eastern Cape about the plight of our African penguin by doing a penguin waddle. Algoa Bay is home to almost half the world’s total population.

We will be ‘waddling’ from the 12th – 15th October and our focus is not on fundraising but is on conservation awareness. The slogan is “We don’t want your money honey, we want your love!” Each person is to make a ‘penguin promise’ as to what they will be doing to save our planet and in turn our penguins, “waddle you do?”

These promises can be sms’d to 34008 with the keyword “penguin (followed by your promise)” or can be filled in on the penguin promises website or on post cards at the Oceanarium during the waddle. This could be anything from using less electricity to living plastic free or picking up litter on our beaches.

Waddlers must wear black and white or dress like a penguin. Banners, signs, flags are welcome – as long as they are of penguins. See the penguin promises website for some ideas and http://www.bayworld.co.za/ for more information.
