Bayworld will be opening a new exhibition entitled Laduma Football Expo in the Museum in June 2010 to coincide with the hosting of the FIFA World Cup and requires the people of Nelson Mandela Bay to get involved.
The exhibition will consist of five components, featuring, four local clubs of Nelson Mandela Bay that have progressed to professional level with four local heroes, Bafana Bafana and some international players from the Eastern Cape area, Bafana Bafana fan culture, the Carbon Footprint which will look at the environmental impact of the tournament and flags of countries attending the games in Port Elizabeth. Sappi Adamis Mill has sponsored R16 000 towards the carbon footprint component of the exhibit. However, the institution is still searching for funding for some of the other components of the exhibit.
Members of the public are invited to get involved by assisting with artefacts required for the displays. The kind of items that can either be donated or loaned to the institution include decorative hard hats, flags, vuvuzelas, football outfits of PE Blackpool, Michau Warriors, Bay United or Bafana Bafana, photographs of past matches and memorabilia with significance for the exhibition.
“The FIFA World Cup matches in Port Elizabeth will generate great interest in the sport. This poses a challenge for our museum to delve into history and present an exhibition for the visiting public.” said Bayworld Director, Sylvia van Zyl. “As Bayworld is a landmark institution in Port Elizabeth, the pulse of the soccer fans will be felt even here. We, therefore, decided to plan an exhibition geared for the local, as well as international visitors.”
Bayworld hopes to benefit from the larger audience that will be in the city during the tournament. The exhibition will also provide Bayworld with a new and interesting display which is focused on a current event.
Anyone who is able to assist are welcome to contact the curator of display, Charmaine Wynne on 041 584 0650.
